The Diploma in Nautical Studies (DNS) at ALAM is Malaysia’s leading maritime programme designed to produce certified deck officers for the global shipping industry. This comprehensive diploma is structured to provide both academic knowledge and practical seafaring skills, preparing graduates for life and leadership at sea.
Throughout the programme, students undergo rigorous academic training at ALAM’s campus, followed by mandatory sea-time onboard international merchant vessels. This structured pathway is designed to qualify graduates for the Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Officer of the Watch, a globally recognised professional credential under the STCW Convention.

Course Overview
The DNS programme blends theoretical maritime studies with hands-on practical seamanship. Students are taught navigation, ship operations, cargo handling, meteorology, maritime law, and emergency procedures.
The programme also instills discipline, safety consciousness, leadership, and teamwork — critical attributes for future deck officers. After completing the academic portion at ALAM, cadets undergo 12 months of onboard training aboard seagoing merchant ships.
Course Duration
The Diploma in Nautical Studies is delivered over 3 years, consisting of:
- 6 semesters of classroom and simulation-based training at ALAM
- 12 months of approved sea-time aboard merchant vessels under a sponsoring shipping company
Graduates are eligible to sit for the Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certification Exam, a key milestone in becoming a licensed deck officer.

Assessments include written exams, simulator evaluations, practical demonstrations, and shipboard performance.
Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements:
- SPM / O-Level: Minimum of 5 credits including Mathematics, Science, and English
- Pass in Bahasa Malaysia
- Physically fit as per IMO/STCW medical standards
Other Requirements:
- Age between 17 – 25 years
- Height minimum 158cm, BMI within healthy range
- Good eyesight and normal colour vision (verified via Ishihara test)
Candidates must pass an aptitude test, interview, and medical examination prior to enrolment.
