Course Overview

The Master of Teaching (MTech) at Macquarie University is a comprehensive postgraduate coursework degree designed for graduates of any bachelor’s degree who aspire to become accredited teachers. The program is offered across three distinct specializations: Primary, Secondary, and Birth to Five Years, each leading to professional registration in that field. The curriculum integrates academic study with extensive supervised professional experience in schools or early childhood settings. It focuses on developing strong pedagogical skills, deep subject content knowledge (for Primary/Secondary), understanding child/adolescent development, inclusive education practices, and the effective use of technology in the classroom.

Course Duration

Length of the course

  • All Master of Teaching programs (Primary, Secondary, Birth to Five Years) are 2-year full-time programs.

Mode of Study for international students:

  • International students are typically required to enroll full-time to meet Australian visa requirements. The program is primarily delivered on campus at the Wallumattagal Campus in Sydney, with significant practical experience placements in schools or early childhood centres. Flexible learning modes (including online components for some units) may be available for domestic students but international students must maintain on-campus study requirements.

Course Curriculum

The Master of Teaching curriculum is rigorous and practical, varying slightly based on the chosen specialization (Primary, Secondary, or Birth to Five Years). However, common elements across all specializations include:

  1. Foundational Education Studies: Units covering educational psychology, learner development, research in education, assessment strategies, inclusive education, and Indigenous education.
  2. Curriculum and Pedagogy: In-depth study of curriculum frameworks relevant to the specialization (e.g., NSW Syllabus for K-6, or Stage 4-6 for Secondary; Early Years Learning Framework for Birth to Five Years), and pedagogical approaches for effective teaching in specific learning areas or age groups.
  3. Professional Experience Placements: A significant component involving supervised teaching practice in real classroom or early childhood settings. This is often embedded throughout the program, integrating theory with practice. Students typically complete a specified number of professional experience days (e.g., 60 days for Secondary).
  4. Subject Content Knowledge (for Primary/Secondary): For Secondary, students must demonstrate adequate subject content knowledge in two teaching areas (major and minor) from their undergraduate degree. Primary students will cover all key learning areas.
  5. Literacy and Numeracy for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE): All students undertaking an initial teacher education course must pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) to graduate.
