The Master of Social Work (Qualifying) curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive education in social work theory and practice, culminating in professional readiness. It integrates academic study with significant field education components.

  1. Core Social Work Theories and Ethics:
    • Foundational theories, ethical practice, and the history and philosophy of social work.
  2. Practice Methods and Interventions:
    • Skills in direct practice with individuals, families, and groups, as well as community work and policy advocacy.
  3. Human Development and Social Contexts:
    • Understanding of human behavior in social environments, mental health, and diverse populations.
  4. Field Education Placements:
    • Two substantial supervised placements (e.g., 500 hours each) in varied social work settings, providing hands-on experience and integration of theory with practice.
  5. Research and Critical Inquiry:
    • Development of research skills to inform evidence-based practice and contribute to social work knowledge.

Admission Requirements

  • Academic qualifications
    • A Bachelor’s degree (AQF Level 7) in any discipline other than social work, from a recognized university.
    • A strong academic record, typically with a credit average (65% or equivalent) or higher.
    • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Relevant Experience
    • While not a strict requirement, prior volunteer or paid experience in human services, community work, or related fields is highly advantageous and demonstrates a commitment to the profession.
  • Interview/Personal Statement
    • Applicants may be required to attend an interview or submit a personal statement outlining their motivations for pursuing social work and their understanding of the profession.

Language Proficiency

  • English language requirements (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL)
    • For international students, demonstrated English language proficiency is required. Acceptable tests include IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 7.0 (with no band less than 7.0), or TOEFL iBT with a minimum overall score of 94 (with a minimum of 24 in listening, 24 in reading, 23 in speaking, and 27 in writing).
