Course Overview

The Master of Data Science (C6002) is a comprehensive postgraduate degree designed to provide advanced knowledge and practical skills in data science. The course is typically 1.5 to 2 years full-time, depending on your prior qualifications, and is structured to accommodate students from various academic backgrounds. It aims to develop a deep understanding of data analysis, interpretation, and application.

The program includes:

  • Foundational Studies: For students with less direct background, bridging units in mathematics, statistics, and programming are offered.
  • Core Data Science Units: Advanced studies in statistical modelling, machine learning algorithms, data management, and ethical data practices.
  • Specialization and Application: Elective units allow for deeper dives into areas like business analytics, bioinformatics, or computational science, often culminating in an advanced research project or industry-based learning component.

This structure ensures graduates are equipped with a robust theoretical framework and practical expertise to excel as data professionals.

Course Duration

Length of the course

  • 2 years full-time (96 credit points) for students with a Bachelor’s degree (non-cognate) or equivalent.
  • 1.5 years full-time (72 credit points) for students with a Bachelor’s degree in a cognate discipline (e.g., IT, Science, Engineering, Business with significant quantitative component) or a relevant graduate certificate/diploma.

Mode of Study for international students:

  • Full-time enrolment is generally required for international students to comply with visa regulations.

Course Curriculum

The Master of Data Science curriculum is designed to provide both a broad foundation and specialised knowledge in the rapidly evolving field of data science. The structure varies slightly based on entry points (96-point or 72-point program).

  1. Core Data Science Units These units are fundamental to all students, covering essential topics such as: Data management and programming, Statistical methods for data science, Machine learning, Big data and cloud computing, and Data Visualisation. These provide a robust toolkit for data professionals.
  2. Specialization and Electives Students select elective units to deepen their knowledge in specific areas or broaden their understanding across various applications of data science. Options typically include:
    • Advanced Machine Learning
    • Deep Learning
    • Business Analytics
    • Geographic Information Science
    • Optimization
    • Network Science
  3. Research or Professional Practice The program culminates in either a significant data science research project (for research-oriented students) or an industry-based learning (IBL) project, providing valuable real-world experience and portfolio development.

Admission Requirements

Entry Criteria

  • Academic qualifications Applicants must have completed one of the following:
    • A Bachelor’s degree in a cognate discipline (e.g., IT, Science, Engineering, Business with significant quantitative component) with a WAM (Weighted Average Mark) of 65% or equivalent, for the 1.5-year program.
    • A Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a WAM of 65% or equivalent, and relevant work experience (e.g., 2 years full-time equivalent in an IT/data-related role), for the 2-year program.
    • A relevant Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma with a WAM of 65% or equivalent.
  • Prerequisite Knowledge (for 2-year program) Students entering the 2-year program may be required to complete foundational units in mathematics, statistics, and/or programming.
