The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) at the University of Otago prepares students to make a real difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities. The programme includes integrated field education experiences and is accredited by the Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB) of New Zealand, enabling graduates to become registered social workers.

Course Overview

The BSW is designed for students passionate about social justice, equity, and community empowerment. The first two years provide foundational studies in social sciences and human development. The final two years focus on specialised social work courses and include 120 days of supervised field education in social service organisations.

You’ll graduate ready to support diverse communities, advocate for change, and work in complex and evolving social environments.

Course Duration

  • 4 Years (Full Time)
  • Includes two supervised fieldwork placements (each of 60 days) in years three and four
  • Students are expected to commit to full-time study, with some fieldwork occurring outside Dunedin

Years 3–4 (Professional Preparation):

  • Social Work Theories and Methods
  • Applied Social Work Practice
  • Mental Health and Addictions
  • Law and the State in Social Work
  • Child Protection and Family Practice
  • Field Education 1 (60 days)
  • Field Education 2 (60 days)
  • Research and Evaluation in Practice
  • Capstone Integration and Reflection

Admission Requirements

Direct Entry (First Year):

  • University Entrance (NCEA Level 3 or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated commitment to social service (e.g., volunteer work recommended)

Second-Year Professional Programme Entry:

  • Completion of required first-year courses
  • Application including personal statement, references, and interview
  • Police vetting and health clearance required

International Students:

  • Equivalent secondary school qualification or transfer credit
  • English Proficiency:
    • IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) or equivalent
