About the Course

The Diploma in Marine Engineering (DME) at ALAM is a specialised programme tailored to train future marine engineers to operate and maintain shipboard propulsion and auxiliary systems with confidence and precision. This course equips cadets with both academic knowledge and practical experience, providing a clear pathway to a rewarding maritime engineering career.

Structured in compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) STCW Convention, the programme blends classroom theory, simulator sessions, and onboard training. Upon graduation and completion of mandatory sea-time, students are eligible to sit for the Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW) — a globally recognised qualification.

Why choose Marine Engineering at ALAM?

Industry connected

ALAM partners with shipping lines and shipyards, offering sea-time placements and hands-on maritime engineering exposure.

Global opportunities

STCW-compliant diploma and CoC enable graduates to work on internationally flagged vessels worldwide.

Professional accreditation

MQA-accredited and Marine Department-approved, the DME meets global STCW standards for marine engineering careers.

Course Overview

The Diploma in Marine Engineering provides the theoretical foundation and hands-on technical skills required to become a competent marine engineer. Students learn the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of marine engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, fuel systems, safety equipment, and shipboard machinery.

With rigorous training in engineering principles and maritime operations, cadets develop discipline, teamwork, and technical confidence essential for managing ship systems under real-world conditions.
